Enhancement of the Luther Monument in Berlin

Enhancement of the Luther Monument in Berlin

Proposal for the Negotiated Procedure: Monuments and Memorials

Contracting Authority: GRÜN BERLIN GmbH

The design uses a small number of precisely placed elements to create a clear, contemporary monument setting with strong symbolic meaning. At its centre stands the figure of Luther — deliberately positioned close to the people rather than elevated above them. The figure rests on a block of black basalt, while a black circle marks the footprint of the original pedestal. History is not reconstructed, but made visible as a trace.

Black-and-white waves in the paving refer to the continuing impact of Luther’s ideas and actions — to resonance, dissemination and social change. The figure, ground design, lighting mast and illuminated information stele form a coherent spatial and conceptual composition.

Light is understood not merely as technical illumination, but as an artistic and intellectual medium. Directed from above, it focuses on Luther’s face, head and Bible without theatrically exaggerating the figure. The height of the lighting mast recalls the former pedestal and the monument’s lost historical setting. The illuminated stele combines information with sensory experience, while dichroic glass responds to sunlight, shadow and the changing course of the day.

The result is a sensitive, spatially clear and narratively powerful monument setting — restrained in form, yet strong in expression.
